For Whom?
The license exchange is applicable to anyone establishing residency in Switzerland. However, note that this requirement does not apply to employees of international organizations holding a legitimation card and enjoying jurisdictional immunity. Since March 1, 2024, cross-border commuters using vehicles for professional purposes in Switzerland and holding a professional license from the EU or EFTA are also exempt.
How?
You have 12 months from your arrival to exchange your foreign license for a Swiss license. After this period, driving in Switzerland with a foreign license is no longer allowed, although the exchange remains possible if your foreign license is still valid.
Receipt timeline
Since the production of the Swiss license is centralized, expect a delivery time of 2 to 3 business days to receive it by mail.

You must present yourself in person at the driver’s license service, without an appointment.
Your foreign license must be valid at the time of the request.
